Do I get paid for this?

Not all work-based learning (WBL) experiences are paid. You may receive a small wage or stipend for participating in some internships, apprenticeships and cooperatives, but it depends on your program and employer.

How old do I have to be to participate?

• Job-shadowing: you must be at least 14 years of age.
• Internships and some apprenticeships: you must be at least 16 years of age.
• Cooperative education: you must be at least 18 years of age.

How does a student under the age of 18 obtain a work permit?

There are a variety of laws and guidelines governing the employment of minors in the State of North Carolina.
